Indication and Important Safety Information
INDICATION
MACI® (autologous cultured chondrocytes on porcine collagen membrane) consists of your own cells that have been expanded and placed on a film before being implanted into the area of cartilage damage and eventually absorbed back into your own tissue.
MACI is indicated for repairing symptomatic cartilage damage in the adult knee. The quantity of MACI used is determined by the size of the cartilage defect. Your surgeon will customize the MACI film to match the size and shape of the damage to ensure full coverage of the affected area.
Limitations of Use
It is unknown whether MACI is effective in joints other than the knee or in patients over 55 years old.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
- Do not use MACI if you are allergic to certain antibiotics, materials from cows, pigs, or oxen, have severe knee osteoarthritis or other inflammatory conditions, infections or inflammation in the bone joint/tissue, blood clotting issues, have undergone knee surgery (excluding biopsy) within the past 6 months, or are unable to comply with post-surgery rehabilitation program instructions prescribed by your doctor.
- If you have cancer in the area of biopsy or implantation, consult your physician as MACI's safety in these cases is uncertain.
- Prior existing conditions such as meniscus tears, joint/ligament instability, or alignment problems should be addressed before or concurrently with MACI implantation.
- Avoid MACI if pregnant. Not recommended for individuals under 18 years old or over age 55.
Common side effects encompass joint pain, tendonitis, back pain, joint swelling, and joint effusion. More severe effects may include joint pain, cartilage or meniscus injury, treatment failure, or osteoarthritis. For detailed guidance, refer to the Full Prescribing Information at MACI.com.
